Once you've decided the NDIS might be right for your family, the next step is making an access request. For many families across Epping, St Marys and Western Sydney, this is the moment the scheme stops being an idea and starts becoming real. It can feel like a big step — so let's break it down into clear, manageable parts.
What is an access request?
An access request is simply how you ask the NDIA to consider whether a person can join the NDIS. It's the formal start of the process. You're telling the agency: "We'd like to apply, and here's why we believe we meet the criteria."
The access request is where NDIS eligibility (age, residence, and disability) gets assessed. If it's approved, you move on to planning.
How to make the request
There are a few ways to begin, and you can choose whichever suits you best:
- By phone — you can call the NDIA and start the conversation over the phone.
- In writing — you can complete an access request form and send it in.
- With help — a local support service, a Local Area Coordinator, or an advocate can help you make the request.
You don't have to do this alone. Bringing in someone who's done it before can take a lot of the pressure off.
Gathering your evidence
This is the part that rewards a little patience. The NDIA needs to understand two things: the disability itself, and how it affects everyday life.
Helpful evidence usually includes:
- Reports or letters from a GP, specialist, or allied health professional
- Information about the diagnosis and whether the condition is permanent
- A clear description of how the disability impacts daily activities — moving around, communicating, self-care, learning, and taking part in the community
Tips for strong evidence
- Be specific. "Needs help most mornings to wash and dress" tells a clearer story than "needs some help."
- Ask your professionals to describe impact, not just diagnosis. The NDIA cares about how daily life is affected.
- Make sure it's recent. Up-to-date reports carry more weight than old ones.
- Keep copies. Hold on to everything you send.
What happens after you apply
Once your access request is submitted, the NDIA reviews it. A few outcomes are possible:
- They may ask for more information. This is common and isn't a bad sign — it just means they need a clearer picture. Respond as fully as you can.
- Access is approved. You'll be invited to a planning meeting, where you'll talk through goals and supports. It helps to know what to expect at your first NDIS planning meeting before you go.
- Access is not approved. If this happens, you'll be given reasons. You can provide more evidence or ask for the decision to be reviewed — a "no" isn't always final.
How long does it take?
The NDIA aims to make a decision within a set timeframe after receiving a complete request. The biggest thing within your control is making sure your evidence is clear and complete from the start, which helps avoid back-and-forth delays.
Getting ready while you wait
The waiting can feel uncertain, so use the time well:
- Start a folder (paper or digital) for all your reports and correspondence.
- Begin thinking about goals. What would a good week look like for your family member? What would they like to work towards?
- Note a typical day. Jotting down the everyday challenges and routines now will make the planning meeting much easier later.
A word of reassurance
If the forms feel intimidating, that's understandable — but remember, behind every form is a person trying to help someone they love. You don't have to use perfect language or know every term. Honesty, clarity, and good evidence matter far more than polish.
