Speaking up can feel uncomfortable. Many people worry that raising a concern will cause trouble, sour a relationship, or even affect their support. So let's say this clearly up front: you have every right to give feedback and make a complaint, and good providers welcome it. Feedback is how support gets better — for you and for others.
This is a warm, practical guide to sharing your thoughts, whether it's a worry or a thank-you, for people and families across Croydon Park, Epping and the Inner West.
Feedback isn't only complaints
It's easy to think of feedback as just complaints, but it's broader than that. Useful feedback includes:
- Telling a provider what's working well
- Suggesting a small change that would help
- Raising something that's bothering you
- Making a formal complaint when something's gone wrong
Positive feedback matters too. Letting a provider know what you love helps them keep doing it, and keeps a good worker by your side. It's also a useful thing to weigh up when you're choosing the right NDIS support worker in the first place.
Start with a simple conversation
For most everyday concerns, the easiest first step is to talk to your provider directly. Often a quick chat clears things up faster than anything formal. You might:
- Mention it to your support worker, if it's about a small thing
- Speak to your coordinator or the provider's office for bigger concerns
- Put it in writing — an email or message — if you'd like a record
A respectful provider will listen, take it seriously, and work with you to put it right.
How to raise a concern clearly
If you're nervous, a little structure helps. Try to share:
- What happened or what's bothering you
- When it happened
- How it affected you
- What you'd like to see change
You don't need fancy language or a long story. Plain, honest words are perfect. And you're allowed to bring a family member, friend or advocate to help you say it.
If talking to your provider isn't enough
Sometimes a concern doesn't get resolved, or it's serious enough that you'd rather take it elsewhere. That's completely valid. You can contact the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission on 1800 035 544. They handle complaints about NDIS supports and services, and they're there for exactly this.
You can make a complaint to the Commission whether or not you've spoken to your provider first, and you can ask someone to help you do it.
You won't be punished for speaking up
This is worth repeating, because the fear is so common. A good provider will never treat you worse for raising a concern. If anything, how a provider responds to feedback tells you a lot about them. One that listens and acts is one worth keeping; one that gets defensive is showing you something important. How a provider handles concerns is closely tied to your rights under the NDIS Code of Conduct.
A few gentle reminders
As you decide whether to speak up, keep these in mind:
- Your feedback helps others, not just you
- You can give feedback anonymously in many cases
- It's okay to ask for help putting your concern into words
- Small concerns are worth raising early, before they grow
You don't have to wait until something is a big problem. Little nudges along the way keep support on track.
Your voice matters
At its heart, feedback is about being heard. The NDIS works best when the people it supports feel able to speak honestly about what's working and what isn't, the kind of warm, person-centred care we believe everyone deserves. Your voice shapes not only your own support, but the quality of support for others across your community too.
Families across Western and Inner West Sydney give feedback every day, and the good providers are genuinely grateful for it.
