Serving: Western Sydney · Inner West Sydney
Caring for someone you love is one of the most generous things a person can do, but it can also stretch a household thin, both financially and emotionally. The good news is that there's more support out there than many carers realise, and a lot of it goes unclaimed simply because people don't know it exists.
We meet carers across Western Sydney and the Inner West who've been quietly going without, never thinking to ask. So here's a warm, plain-English rundown of the main supports available to carers in Australia. None of this is financial advice, but it's a starting point to help you check what you might be missing.
Two different payments, often confused
A common mix-up is between Carer Payment and Carer Allowance. They're separate, and you may be eligible for one, both, or neither, so it's worth understanding the difference.
Carer Payment
Carer Payment is an income support payment for people who provide constant care to someone with disability, a severe medical condition, or who is frail aged. Because it's a primary income, it has income and assets tests, and you generally can't be doing substantial paid work while receiving it.
In short, it's designed for carers whose caring role makes it hard to support themselves through work.
Carer Allowance
Carer Allowance is a smaller supplementary payment for people who give daily care to someone with disability or a medical condition. It's not income support, it's a regular top-up to help with the extra costs of caring, and it has a higher income test threshold than Carer Payment.
Importantly, you can often receive Carer Allowance *as well as* working, and sometimes alongside Carer Payment. Many carers who assume they earn "too much" are surprised to find they qualify for the Allowance.
Both are administered through Services Australia (Centrelink), and eligibility depends on your circumstances and the level of care you provide. It's always worth checking your own situation directly rather than assuming.
Carer Gateway: more than money
Money is only part of the picture. Carer Gateway is the national service for carers, and it offers practical and emotional support that's free to access. It's one of the most underused resources we know of.
Through Carer Gateway, carers can access:
- Counselling, in person or by phone
- Peer support groups with others who understand
- Coaching and skills courses
- Emergency respite when something unexpected comes up
- Help to plan and connect with local services
You can reach Carer Gateway by phone or online, and a local provider near Western Sydney can help you work out what's available. It pairs beautifully with the everyday support for families and carers we provide.
Don't forget the everyday extras
Beyond the main payments, there are smaller supports that can ease the day-to-day costs of caring. Depending on eligibility, these can include:
- Carer Supplement, an annual lump sum for those receiving qualifying payments
- Companion Card, which gets a carer free entry to many venues and events across NSW
- Concessions on transport, utilities and council rates
- Health Care Card benefits, including cheaper prescriptions
A small phone call to Services Australia or a chat with a financial counsellor can uncover supports you didn't know applied to you. Many carers in the Inner West tell us the relief isn't just financial, it's knowing they were never meant to do this entirely alone.
Where the NDIS fits in
It's worth being clear: Carer Payment and Carer Allowance support *you*, the carer, while the NDIS funds supports for the *person you care for*. They work alongside each other.
A well-structured NDIS plan can dramatically lighten your load by funding personal care support, respite and backup care, and capacity building and independence for your loved one. If you're unsure how it all fits together, our plain-English guide to how the NDIS works is a gentle place to start, and so are our wider notes on looking after your own wellbeing.
How to actually claim
Knowing support exists is one thing, claiming it is another. A few tips to make it less daunting:
- Gather your documents first, identity, income details, and medical evidence about the person you care for.
- Ask for a medical report early, as Carer Payment and Allowance often need one from a treating doctor.
- Apply online or by phone through Services Australia, and don't be put off by the forms, help is available.
- Keep records of what you've claimed and any reference numbers.
- Ask for help from a financial counsellor (free through many community centres) or a social worker if it feels overwhelming.
If a claim is knocked back, you have the right to ask for a review. Don't assume the first answer is the final one.
You deserve support too
Carers hold families and communities together, often at real cost to themselves. Claiming the support you're entitled to isn't taking something you don't deserve, it's accepting help that exists precisely because your role matters.
