"Technology Skills for Everyday Independence"

Technology is woven through everyday life now. We use phones to stay in touch, apps to catch the bus, the internet to shop and bank, and video calls to see family. When you're confident with these tools, a lot of daily tasks become easier and the world feels more open. When you're not, it can feel like everyone's speaking a language you never learned.
The good news is that technology is a skill anyone can build, step by step, with friendly support and plenty of patience, as part of capacity building and independence.
Why tech skills matter for independence
Being comfortable with technology touches almost every part of life. It can help you:
- Stay connected with friends and family through messages and video calls
- Manage appointments and reminders
- Catch public transport using trip-planning apps and grow confidence on public transport
- Shop and bank safely online
- Find information, entertainment, and community
- Use communication or accessibility tools that suit your needs
Each of these is a doorway to more independence. The more confident you feel with tech, the more you can do on your own.
Starting where you are
Everyone comes to technology from a different place, so good support always starts with a chat. We want to know what you already use, what feels confusing, and what you'd love to be able to do.
Maybe you'd like to send a text without help, make a video call to family, set reminders for appointments, or feel safe shopping online. Whatever your goal, we break it into small, manageable steps and go at your pace. There's no rushing and no judgement.
Learning in a hands-on way
Technology sticks best when you actually use it, so we learn by doing. Rather than reading about how an app works, we open it together and try it out, with you in the driver's seat.
Early on, we might walk through a task side by side. Later, you take the lead while we offer a little reassurance. Eventually, you're doing it confidently on your own. That gradual handover builds skills that last.
Staying safe online
Confidence with technology also means staying safe. The online world has its risks, so we make online safety a natural part of every lesson.
We help you learn to:
- Recognise scams and dodgy messages
- Keep passwords strong and private
- Know what's safe to share and what isn't
- Feel comfortable asking for help when something seems off
Feeling safe is a big part of feeling independent, and it's something we never skip over.
Working alongside allied health
Technology can be especially powerful when it supports a specific need, and that's where teamwork helps. An occupational therapist might recommend accessibility settings, adaptive devices, or apps that make daily tasks easier. A speech pathologist might set up AAC and communication tools or an app and suggest the best way to use it.
Our role is to take those recommendations and put them into everyday practice with you, so the tools actually become part of your life. When everyone uses the same approach, progress comes faster and feels far less confusing. We're always happy to reinforce the strategies your therapist has set and share what we're noticing so the plan can adjust as you grow.
Real progress, real connection
We've supported people across the Inner West who went from feeling nervous about their phone to confidently video-calling family, managing their own reminders, and planning trips with a transport app. One person in Five Dock now does their grocery shop online without a second thought. Another in Croydon Park stays in touch with friends through a group chat they once found overwhelming.
These changes do more than tick off tasks. They keep people connected and reduce that sense of being left behind.
Going at your own pace
Some people pick up new tech quickly, and others need more time and repetition. Both are completely fine. Progress isn't a straight line for anyone. We celebrate the small wins, adjust when something isn't working, and never push faster than feels right for you.
